Dental Assistant
Dental assistants have many duties, including patient care, assisting with procedures, and administrative tasks.

Dental assistants play a key role in ensuring smooth dental procedures, patient care, and the overall functioning of the dental office. They work alongside the dentist to provide more efficient dental treatment.
Some dental assistants are specially trained to take x rays of teeth and the surrounding areas. They place a protective apron over patients’ chest and lap, position the x-ray machine, place the x-ray sensor or film in patients’ mouths, and take the x rays. Afterward, dental assistants ensure that the images are clear.

Perform dental x-rays (radiology permit)

Prepare patients and the work area

Sterilize dental instruments

Hand instruments to the dentist

Dry patients' mouths
​
Dental assistants play a key role in ensuring smooth dental procedures, patient care, and the overall functioning of the dental office. They work alongside the dentist to provide more efficient dental treatment. ​​

After completion of the dental assistant course students will also receive a radiology certificate to apply for the radiology permit.

Certifying Organizations and Exam Requirements
There are two certifying organizations dental assistant students can choose from; American Medical Technologists (AMT) or the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB)

AMT Exam requirements:

Applicant shall have been employed as a dental assistant for a minimum of three years (5,250 hours).

A copy of your high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
-
Documented, relevant, full-time work experience for minimum of 3 years that is verified by AMT
-
Valid CPR card (copy of front + back) that includes hands-on training
DANB Requirements:​

High school graduation or equivalent
-
Minimum of 3,500 hours of approved work experience
-
Current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS from a DANB-accepted provider
